OCCUPY NUKES hiroshima day AUGUST 6

OWS Environmental Solidarity Working Group calls for OCCUPY NUKES, a national day of action against the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal. On August 6th, Hiroshima Day, take action against a part of the war machine–nuclear warheads, which number 10,000–that takes up $7.6 billion of the Obama FY 2012 budget.

The 99% have tools to transform this waste and danger into structures that meet our real needs: true sustainability, (true security,) just food production, jobs, renewable energy, affordable housing, education, and economic justice. We awaken in order to do so on August 6.

Occupy Nukes will take place in New York City, San Francisco, Santa Fe, and Los Alamos, NM, as well as in solidarity with what activists do all over the world at this time to remember the U.S. government’s use of nuclear warfare, to oppose its continued use of nuclear warfare (as with depleted-uranium weaponry), and to radically turn from nuclear technology and dirty power.
To participate in New York City, our direct action will meet across from the (eastern face of the) GE Building (30 Rockefeller Plaza), at the steps that descend into the sunken cafe area.  Be there at 5:30pm, August 6.  Wear black.

MARCH 24 – DISRUPT DIRTY POWER – JOIN US!

Occupy Wall Street to Disrupt

The Business of Pollution!
We will gather @ the United Nations Plaza
405 E. 42nd Street  5:00PM!!

Occupy Wall Street
is planning a month of action starting March 24 and leading up to Earth Day April 22. Globally coordinated actions by Occupy groups and ally organizations will “connect the dots between the 1% and the destruction of the planet.”

This is a chance for labor, environment, sustainability, and other allied groups and activists to work together to plan local actions.

Visit the website for the actions: http://disruptdirtypower.org/

DistruptDirtyPower.org is a collaboration between Occupy Wall Street, allied organizations and many others who are deeply concerned with the political and financial corruption that is funding and enabling the destruction of our environment.

99 > Dirty Power connects the dots between big banks on Wall Street, big polluters and the politicians who profit from both.

Oil giants admit that climate change is happening and that humans are causing it. BP calls climate change, “a major global challenge - one that will require the efforts of governments, industry and individuals.” According to ExxonMobil, “Rising greenhouse gas emissions pose significant risks  to society and ecosystems…Stabilization poses a significant challenge, especially for CO2, the most significant of the GHGs emitted by human activities.”

Yet they keep digging for oil and coal, unearthing the fossil fuels that have already sent us over safe upper limit  of CO2 in our atmosphere. Why? Because they’re making billions doing it.

Big Banks like Bank of America, Chase, Citigroup, HSBC and Wells Fargo are the biggest investors in these companies’ projects. The same banks that foreclosed on millions of Americans’ homes are busy foreclosing on Earth. They gladly underwrite anything that smells like money no matter how terrible the cost to the rest of us, our children and our planet’s future.

We have asked our politicians to write and enforce new energy legislation that will stop the extraction and burning of fossil fuels in order to prevent rapid climate change. But those very same politicians are in the pockets of both the Big Polluters and the Big Banks who lobby against real climate legislation.

By investing in these banks, we are investing directly in dirty power.
Enough is enough. We will not stand by and watch while the oil giants, their too big to fail funders, and their bought and paid for politicians ruin the climate we depend on. It’s time for us to take matters into our own hands.

On March 24 stage two of Move Your Money begins - and this time, Americans will be taking action and closing their accounts at the Big Banks because our future depends on it.

For one month leading up to Earth Day on April 22, we are calling on all Americans to move your money into community banks and credit unions from Big Banks like Bank of America, Chase, Citi, HSBC, Wells Fargo etc. This doesn’t mean transferring personal accounts alone: it means going into your communities and having your schools, community centers, local businesses and local government agencies move their money too. We all need to stop investing in dirty power and to pull the plug on the banks that do.

We are the 99%. We have power, vastly greater power than the companies and banks whose oil and coal and gas profits have blinded them to the reality we all face if we continue burning fossil fuels. There is no other option. We will defend ourselves and our future. We will put our money where our mouths are: by saying No to Big Polluters, No to Big Banks, No to Profiteering Politicians.

WHAT: Disrupt Dirty Power!

WHEN: March 24: Disrupt Dirty Power Global Direct Action

March 24 – April 22: Move Your Money 2.0 – A month-long campaign to disrupt dirty power as we draw the connections between Big Banks, Big Polluters and the Politicians who Profit from both.

Have you had your Dreams crushed? Heart broken? Want to love again, but maybe feel the need to end a bad experience once and for all?

To heal ourselves as a community, to reclaim our capacity to Love and Trust, we are joining together to celebrate one another– and to make our voices heard clearly: we want a system that respects people, plants, animals and the planet itself!

Creative opportunities, music and Gift-Making-Giving will be on site throughout the day. Do you want to express your need to change your relationship with banks, money or want to close an account? Feel free to bring a Valentine or make one on site. There will be food, art-making, performances, music, drums, dancing, presentations and opportunities to reclaim and empower your capacity to Know yourself and to Love yourself (and others!).

Be sure to come at 4pm, where we will complete the offerings and teachings and hear from our sponsors Mountain Justice, Organization for Occupation, Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir. Then we will march to the nearest Bank and deliver our Blue Valentine’s and finally return to the park to clean up and share dinner.

It sure seems as though Bank of America loves profits more than people. We want out of this abusive relationship. Bank of America has foreclosed on more homes than any other bank in the United States. They are also foreclosing on the planet through their investments in coal and mountaintop removal and the underwriting of loans to the US coal industry.

The watchdog group Public Citizen filed a petition with the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department this week calling for the break up of Bank of America, warning its too-big-to-fail status poses “a grave threat to US financial stability.”

On February 14th, Valentine’s Day, we will break up with Bank of America. Come on down to Washington Square Park and join us!

And any other relationships you need to end– bring bank statements, etc you no longer need or want.

We keep giving and giving and get nothing in return. This is a toxic relationship. And we want out. Anyone who shares our views or wants to know more is welcome to come by and join us.

If you want our love Bank of America you’ll have clean up your act: quit kicking working class, poor and elderly people out of their homes and divest from coal and all forms of fossil fuel.

Bank of America, its over. That’s why we’re meeting in Public, please: don’t make a scene.

Bank of America received a public $54 billion dollar TARP bailout, additional loans of nearly a trillion dollars. They received a tax refund of $1.9 billion in 2009, and $1 billion in 2010 after paying $0 in taxes. The excess of their Board of Directors is well-known, and we will highlight these sundry details. The Federal Reserve wants to approve of Bank of America’s transfer of $22 trillion of questionable assets to a publicly-insured FDIC account, against the wishes of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), an independent agency created by the U.S. Congress to maintain stability and public confidence in the financial system.

Bank of America executives have not been as generous to America as we have been to them. The bank has continued to foreclose on homes at an alarming rate. Meanwhile, they have pumped $4.3 billion into the US coal industry over the last 2 years—more than any other bank. Yet their website celebrates $45 million in loans for “Energy Efficiency” and has still not moved ahead with a cooperative alternative energy program SolarStrong yet they have invested in greenhouse-gas-emitting companies, including Arch Coal, Patriot Coal, Consol, Peabody Energy and Edison International.

Others have also called to break up with specific companies unless they change their ways, such as the CIW who has highlighted Trader Joe’s as a company that could do better in honoring the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. http://www.ciw-online.org

Taking part in the break up: members of the Occupy Wall Street Environmentalist Solidarity Working Group, which focuses on ecological aspects of the Occupy Movement, Mountain Justice, fighting coal and mountaintop removal in Appalachia and worldwide, NYU4OWS, students and others in the NYU community in Solidarity with OWS, and Organize for Occupation, which organizes communities in New York City to halt foreclosures and moves homeless families into disused bank possessed homes. Song and Sermon will be provided by Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir.
